NAUTILOS - Citizen Science Low-cost drifters for marine litter coastal monitoring - CNR ISMAR |
This project utilizes traditional marine litter to create drifters equipped with electronic devices for analyzing sea routes. The use of ordinary litter provides a realistic model for studying ocean currents, while also being cost-effective and easily assembled by makers, associations, and schools. The drifters feature solar panels for energy and transmit data via GSM. The project aims to enhance monitoring efforts and raise awareness about marine litter in alignment with the Marine Strategy Framework Directive. The drifters are equipped with self-sustaining solar panels and transmit data through the GSM network. The novelty lies in the specially created software that records data in case of signal loss and transmits it as soon as the signal returns.

A filter system with a 100 μm mesh size, at a depth of approximately 4-5 m. The FerryBox system enables large volume low cost microplastic sampler consisting of a filter holder allowing large sampling volumes (up to 10 000 L) to enable sampling down to background levels.

This dataset encompasses the detection of red fluorescent microspheres (uvpms_by) within the size range of 48-51 µm. The detection and analysis of the red fluorescence signal were conducted using microplastic detector photodiode (PD) channels 4, 5, and 6, each equipped with red fluorescence filters. These photodiodes have different signal gains, facilitating a broader dynamic range of detection. The timetrace data of the PD signals were captured and subsequently filtered using a low-pass filter. The timetrace data exhibited peaks corresponding to the presence of red microplastic particles in the measured sample. A peak-finding algorithm was employed to identify all peaks within the data. The dataset includes consecutive event numbers, representing peaks identified across all target channels (4, 5, and 6). Events detected in only a subset of these channels were excluded from the dataset. For each event, the amplitude (measured in the ADC sample range of 0-4095) and the width (measured in the number of samples) of the peak are reported. This dataset provides detailed information on the peak height and width for every event detected across all three channels, offering valuable insights into the detection capabilities of the microplastic detector.

The test objective was to evaluate the phytoplankton and suspended matter filter sampler for sampling phytoplankton and various DNA preservation methods for the sampler?s filters, and ultimately to find a method which preserves DNA well enough so that the sampler can operate autonomously as part of a FerryBox system for more than a week on ships of opportunity in WP7 demonstrations, with cooling at 4 ºC, before manually retrieving the filters for onshore analysis. The test was conducted in NIVA's lab in Oslo.

CNR-IRBIM implemented the "AdriFOOS" observational system, by installing the FOOS on some commercial fishing boats operating in the Adriatic Sea. Since then the datacenter based in Ancona receives daily data sets of environmental parameters collected along the water column and close to the sea bottom (eg. temperature, salinity, etc.), together with GPS haul tracks, catch amounts per haul, target species sizes and weather information. Some temperature and salinity measurements acquired by the FOOS in the Adriatic Sea from January 2014 to March 2015 were published within the JERICO project and some oxygen and fluorescence profiles obtained in 2017 within the NEXOS project.
